Synopsis

Probably the most successful attempt at re-working the Carry On film into a 20-minute TV format. All the favourite comic types are included; you see two stunning performances from Sid James and Jack Douglas, jittering throughout the show with nerves and panicked energy and flustered by the imposing threats from the Royalists and the Roundheads.

Joan Sims plays the part she has grown into over the years and nags away in the background. Barbara Windsor loses her clothes – almost a given by this stage – and Peter Butterworth is great as Oliver Cromwell.

This is basically the TV episode ‘The Baron Outlook’, re-shot in different costumes, but here the comedy flows with originality and confidence and the writer, Dave Freeman’s gags don’t interfere with the flow of the story and when the good gags come along they really hit home.
